As successor to the Clerkenwell, Kupersmith is a gastropub fitted into what must have once been a Lower East Side department store, complete with display windows. The new design is credited to a group of School for the Visual Arts students. Apart from being attractive in a laid back sort of way, there’s nothing too distinctive about the decor. The food is mainly a side attraction to the drinks, as evidenced by the too-brief period (only till 9pm) that the kitchen serves it. Available are a multiplicity of sausages, some of them quite good, plus a juicy burger, a meager fish-and-chips with mediocre chips, and something called "Toad In The Hole," which we leave you to Google. The bratwursts, delivered in pairs and credited to Schaller & Weber, were our favorites.
