Located in a handsome townhouse on the Upper East Side, Le Petite Maison specializes in the sunny, clean flavors of Provence and Nice. Executive chef Nicole Rubi, with the help of consulting chef and Nice native Alain Alegretti (Alegretti, Le Cirque), have devised a classic menu of southern French dishes. Seafood is well represented, including seared scallops with roasted garlic, Dover sole cooked in butter and roasted lobster with linguini. More rustic fare includes herb-crusted rack of lamb, zucchini blossom beignets and milk-fed veal for two. Brushing up on your French is probably a good idea before coming here, as it seems like everyone, from the host to the waitresses to the well-to-do guests, is from France. The atmosphere switches from subdued and sophisticated at lunch to a lively party during brunch and late at night, with the moneyed crowd sipping on rosé and champagne like it was water. —Keith Wagstaff
