There is beauty in simplicity. Take this Midtown restaurant's menu. It features one thing and one thing only -- steak frites. Oh, but what a steak it is, a tender strip steak sourced from farms in Nebraska and Iowa, served under a rich buttery sauce with hints of thyme, the recipe for which is kept a secret. It comes in two servings with heaps of crispy pommes frites (cut from Bintje potatoes) and a walnut salad. The cost for the entire meal is $24, a steal for the neighborhood. In Paris, where the restaurant originally started back in 1959, and its other location in London, long lines are the norm thanks to the no-reservations policy. While it's still all walk-ins here, you probably won't have to wait long to get seated. Once you are, waitresses in French maid outfits will serve you; ask them for the house Bordeaux, a bargain at only $22.—Keith Wagstaff
