This strictly vegetarian cafe is a breath of fresh air in the East Village's Curry Corridor, the first in the neighborhood to specialize in Southern Indian cooking. We especially liked the lentil soup laced with lemon and cilantro, spongy iddly dumplings, and lemon rice studded with cashews and toasted dahl. Dosa, the potato-stuffed crepes, are available in seven variations, but even better are the utthappam, fermented rice-and-lentil pancakes. The menu is rounded out with breads and curries of eggplant, green beans, cauliflower, and homemade cheese. Why didn't anyone think of it before?
