The fact that it's hard to find, hidden away in the middle of Stanton Street on the Lower East Side, adds to Mangiami's homey flavor. This clean, contemporary trattoria mixes old world charm (exposed brick, little vases full of flowers) with modern touches (contemporary art, sleek wooden furniture), a mix that attracts plenty of couples on dates. The star of the menu is the homemade pappardelle, which comes smothered in pink sauce and dotted with prosciutto and mushrooms, although the rest of the pastas are pretty impressive as well, like the Fusilli with salmon and the spaghetti with calamari and black olives. Meaty entrees like the tagliata, or sliced steak, with arugula and the prosciutto-wrapped chicken are great options if you¹re really hungry; more casual fare like Panini and bruschetta are available if you just want to snack. Owner Gianfranco Costa used to be a DJ, so expect great tunes and occasional turntable sets from his friends.—Keith Wagstaff
