Chef Tadashi Ono made his reputation imparting a Japanese twist to French food at La Caravelle and Sono. Now he finds himself in a sprawling subterranean space that recalls the dark ribbed interior of Jonah's whale. The conservative menu, described as "home-style Japanese cooking," owes more than a little to Nobu. The five-piece Matsuri sushi is a thrilling venture into "new style" sushi, with its searings and dabs of tart sauce, while other dishes one-up your neighborhood Japanese;like the 12-inch tempura eel;but with generally meager portions, you may wonder if you're trapped, not inside a whale, but inside a cash cow.
