Named after Jamaica's biggest tourist trap (or greatest partying attraction, based on your perspective), Mo-Bay started out as a small Jamaican café near downtown Brooklyn (now sadly defunct) and morphed into an upscale place on the gentrifying eastern edge of Harlem's 125th Street. The food retains much of its zip, though the soul food, barbecue, and Louisiana Cajun/Creole standards added to the menu have confused things somewhat. While the jerk chicken we tried was on the dry side (the gravy didn't help), the snapper rundown, laked with an agreeable coconut-milk-sauce, was way better, and we developed a particular fondness for--of all things! --a curry of textured vegetable protein impersonating chicken. Best side: the fried manioc-meal triangle called bammie.
