Mole is the younger sibling of a Lower East Side watering hole, and it comes as something of a surprise that the mainstream Mexican food is so perfectly prepared. The tortilla soup is a special delight, heaped with cheese and sporting a dried red pepper that can be crumbled into the well-flavored potage. Criss-crossed with crema and guacamole, the chicken flautas are flawlessly fried, the vegetarian poblano chiles resting in a generous cistern of tomato sauce that provides ample moisture for making little tacos out of the corn tortillas, deploying the rice and beans. The restaurant's interior is cavernous, brick-lined, and decorated with historic Mexican photos--and just chill enough to be a good date spot.
