This is either the most entertaining or most absurd restaurant in New York, depending on your age and tolerance for being served by acrobatic ninja warriors. Descend down a dark, underground tunnel and into an ersatz Japanese village, complete with rustic wooden roofs, rusty chains and, of course, ninjas, perhaps the first in history to work for tips. Diners are led to private rooms, where dinner is occasionally disrupted by costumed waiters opening doors to bring in food or perform tricks. The menu is classic Japanese, available a la carte or in tasting menus ($60-88), featuring sushi and a host of unique dishes. The Katana matches teriyaki Angus steak with fried risotto and Alaskan king crab, while the steaming Poseidon¹s Pot includes mussels and calamari cooked with white soy sauce, sake and mirin. There are drinks for adults, including Japanese beers, French wines and Asian-inspired cocktails, and a menu for kids, filled with teriyaki chicken, California rolls and more.—Keith Wagstaff
