Sad to say, but New York City’s vaunted neighborhood pizza parlors have been gradually disappearing from the urban landscape. These places didn’t always peddle great pizza, but the output was often good and cheesy, and two slices with a Coke had been the default worker's lunch in the city for decades. The neighborhood pizzerias have been replaced mainly by national fast-food franchises—Subway and Dunkin’ Donuts, in particular—leaving many neighborhoods lacking. That’s why Not Ray’s (a/k/a Famous Rudi’s) is such an important presence on this stretch of Fulton Street in Fort Greene: The pizzeria makes it possible to get a plain-old iconic New York slice in conventional surroundings, which might become the ultimate culinary nostalgia. The cheese is fine, the crust is better than average, but the sauce is a bit on the sweet side. And all the other expected Italian-American stuff is available, including heros, calzones, and novel pies, such as spicy Buffalo chicken and Caesar salad.
