Ignore the pricey suggestions of the waitstaff and go for some of New York's best home-style Malaysian cooking at bargain prices. Start with the wonderful pasembur, a sharable salad of sprouts, jicama, cucumber, and tofu surmounted by herb-flecked fritters smothered in chile sauce, then proceed to "squids wrapped in silver foil;rings of steamed cephalopod made triply tart with lemon, lemongrass, and lime leaves. Other faves include achat, a plate of sweet pickled vegetables dotted with sesame seeds, and yam rice, a cheap side of rice, yam, Chinese sausage, and assorted vegetables that could almost be a main course.
