There is a reason why this restaurant is so often associated with wedding proposals. It's a classically romantic place, located in the West Village inside of an 18th Century carriage house once owned by Aaron Burr. The fireplaces, ornate chandeliers, oil paintings and flower displays have made this a go-to date spot for several decades. There is even a resident pianist, playing old-fashioned ditties on a baby grand piano. The menu is American and Continental cuisine with hints of the past, meaning dishes rarely seen in restaurants anymore, such as beef Wellington and Dover sole meuniere, are served alongside more modern creations like a hamachi tartare served over yuzu foam. A prix fixe menu ($78) is offered along with a chef's tasting menu ($105); on Sundays musicians come in for the jazz brunch ($25), where you can enjoy live music with your quiche or omelette.—Keith Wagstaff
