Northern Italian cuisine is the focus at this East Village trattoria. The restaurant doesn't overdo it on the rustic charm, tastefully balancing out hardwood floors and thick wooden tables with modern touches like whitewashed brick and arty photo prints. The menu similarly balances new and old with traditional dishes like risotto with porcini mushrooms and homemade papardelle with braised oxtail contrasted against more unorthodox fare like saffron risotto arancini balls and crusted wild bass with Brussels sprouts and baby beets. The all-Italian wine list features around 30 bottles, with many wines available by the glass, complemented by a small selection of Italian and German beers. During weekends, people stop in for the brunch prix fixe, which includes coffee or tea, a brunch cocktail and a main dish for only $12. The warm, casual atmosphere makes it a natural spot for both dates and large groups, although in the latter case you might want to make a reservation.—Keith Wagstaff
