This sprawling, noisy Upper East Side gastropub serves Irish-inspired fare alongside beer and specialty cocktails. Go for sweet fried bangers, fried McClure’s pickles, or a hefty pub-style hamburger. Those looking to keep things light can indulge in a classic wedge salad (generously sprinkled with bacon, of course). Arrive on the early side if you’re looking for a casual place to relax with friends and family: When it’s quiet, you’ll notice the lovely design of the room and the friendliness of the staff. But arrive late in the evening and the Penrose will be a different sort of place, packed full of rowdy singles doing picklebacks like there’s no tomorrow.
