Under an unassuming block-lettered sign in Jersey City, authentic Filipino food keeps locals loyal and lures folks from Brooklyn and Queens to Jersey City. Philippine Bread House is known for its soft white rolls called pan de sal. The warm breads are palm-sized and are best eaten still in the store. A smear or cheese or butter won't hurt, but there's something to be said for biting into the naked bread. A couple of bucks will get you a warm bag of assorted baked goodies; let the salespeople pick out what’s best that day. Chances are it'll be the bincho, a sugar-dusted pastry reminiscent of a zeppole or a churro, ube, a fluffy bread stuffed with bright purple yams, or espasol, a dessert made with toasted flour coconut strips and condensed milk. A steam table in the back showcases savory stews and roasts for lunch, and those looking to cater an entire meal can pre-order glazed hams or a roasted suckling pig. --Jessica Goodman
