Founded in 1977, this Chicago-based franchise is actually quite good. The ambiance of the Union Square branch is old-timey, but not in an obnoxious sort of way, with photos and other objects recalling the history of the neighborhood. The sandwiches are served warm, on bread made on the premises. The bread is the weak part of the formula, but the oddly shaped mini-loaves are way better than Subway’s. There are three signature sandwiches, of which the “pizza” is our favorite, dumping generous quantities of pepperoni, meatballs, and spicy capicola (a type of Italian-American charcuterie dear to Brooklyn) in a swamp of marinara and cheese. Roast beef, tuna salad, and other standard sandwich choices are less exciting.
