Sailing into town on a wave of hype, Rabbit in the Moon is a gastropub with nightclub pretensions. The exterior is like the gatehouse of a baronial mansion, while the inside might remind you of a boutique hotel lobby decorated with portraits of literary figures (can you spot a bored-looking Tennyson?). The food is sometimes good, including a pair of seared scallops (though missing the promised caviar), lamb chops with a strange white yogurt sauce, and a version of bangers-and-mash that featured-at the outset, at least-Italian sausages. The service, however, is atrocious, with glasses left unfilled, comically clumsy waiters, and a strong sense that the staff is always looking you up and down and finding you inadequate to their level of social ambition.
