Rural is one of four restaurants from the Dongbei region operating in Flushing. Wedged between North Korea and Russia, this area was once called Manchuria, and the food shows influences from its neighbors and beyond, also including Japan, Mongolia, Beijing, Taiwan, and, oddly enough, Germany. Unexpected dishes range from a succotash of corn and pine nuts to lamb stir-fried with cumin seed to pig-ear aspic -- and organ meats abound. Still, the plain, thick-skinned dumplings stuffed with pork and Chinese celery and the various preparations of whole fried flounder are likely to delight nearly any diner. This is one of the few Chinese restaurants in town where you can get pitchers of beer--thanks, Germans!
