Sel de Mer is a seafood restaurant at heart, but this affordable East Williamsburg bistro enlivens traditional fish shack fare. A simply prepared whole roasted fish appears on the menu, and the whole lobster is a deal for New York. Oysters come from the raw bar with a pickled watermelon mignonette, and curry, chorizo, and coconut surprisingly don't feel out of place alongside drawn butter and house-made tartar sauce. There are typically a few varieties of moules-frites, and the excellent hake or crab sliders do the job of a burger better than their beefy counterpart. During dinner, the low-light sconces gently illuminate a handful of framed nautical scenes that--combined with the dining room's dark wood details--evoke a cute cabin-like chic. Typical weekend brunch plates incorporate a pescatarian twist, and the crispy fish and chips work in tandem with a shrimp-fortified bloody mary to squash a hangover. --Alex Spoto
