One of the few places around here where kilts can seem kind of menacing, Shoolbred's serves as the area's darkest, most mysterious spot to sip a pilsner. The Scottish-inflected interior is wooden, weathered and antique-heavy, filled with paisley wallpaper, dim maroon lamps, a flickering fireplace, abundant panels of stained glass, and portraits of anonymous mustachioed men. The patrons, however, are hyper-modern East Village scenesters who, if it weren't for their own mustaches, would seem as though they'd broken into some poor old Scot's parlor and set up shop. Regardless, it's a place this cast of regulars calls home.
