Established in 1967, Singas cut its eye teeth in Elmhurst and Jackson Heights adapting American pizza for vegetarian Indian tastes. Their signature was a single-person pie featuring a single ingredient like broccoli, cauliflower, or spinach. Single-mindedly, there were no optional extra ingredients or mixtures of vegetables. Following the opening of a branch on Jersey City's Newark Avenue, Manhattan was considered ripe for conquest, and now there's an East Village Singas, but with an expanded menu that includes subs, spaghettis, wings, and various other meat-bearing meals, in addition to the core vegetarian menu. The jalapeno pie is a favorite way to set the mouth on fire.
