Sired by the East Village's excellent Cacio e Pepe, this trattoria seems more intent on becoming like Falai, assuming an experimental bent by tossing cocoa in the gnocchi, caramelizing celery, and siding pork loin with something called fried cream. Still, many of the ordinary things are the most memorable: the well-tempered cheeses and excellent charcuterie, for example, or the kissing-cousin of eggplant parmesan called, rather grandly, zucchini timbale. Located on a quiet, tree-lined side street, Spiga offers a romantic ambience and food good enough to make me want to return.
