Strand Smokehouse cunningly combines two rollicking institutions: the German beer garden and the American, mainly Southern, smokehouse. Fulfilling its beer garden functions, it offers a vast array of on-tap craft brews, and adds a beguiling selection of small-batch whiskeys, tapped from wooden kegs, plus cocktails utilizing those distillates. The barbecue function of this 5,000 square foot institution – located mainly indoors in Astoria, but with small front and back outdoor areas – is not as sure-footed. From an alternating array of meats, the rib eye was fantastic, and the pork belly was pretty good, but both the barbecued pastrami and pulled pork fell short. And, as at most barbecues, the sides are entirely forgettable.
