This first offshoot of the celebrated Hell’s Kitchen bakery is less bakery and more coffee shop and snackery. With its lively décor, excellent java, and interesting selection of sandwiches and pastries, it makes a formidable daytime hang – complete with wi-fi. Served on the bakery’s pizza bianca, the sandwiches tend to be pressed. Recommended are ceci (made with chick pea fritters), porchetta (Tuscan pork roast), and caprese (after the salad of tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil leaves). Reflecting the sensibilities of proprietor Jim Lahey, the baked goods are quirky but often delectable, especially the custard-crammed donuts called bomboloni and the olive oil cake, washed down with the house lemonade.
