This garishly decorated cafe promises tacos from Tijuana, and what that means in practice is an emphasis on the corn-based meals called antijitos made from wonderful hand-patted tortillas, sopes, huaraches, etc. The name of the place is what Baja natives call themselves, after a fragrant thistle that blooms in the desert. While there are no fish tacos (which may be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of Baja), there are lots of southern Mexico specialties from Puebla and Guerrero, including chicken mole poblano, stewed ox tongue, and beefsteak served with cactus, plus a wealth of corn-based snacks, some of them not well known here. Ever heard of a mulita? It’s a sort of sandwich made with an outsize, freshly made corn tortilla.
