This East Village burger joint tries to make its mark by serving only grass-fed beef from Hardwick Beef, meaning the cows roam freely and are free of hormones and antibiotics. The restaurant is a modest affair, clean and simple, with a few tables and woman behind a counter taking orders under a giant photo of a hamburger. The Classic is a 1/3 lb of beef (always grilled to medium well) topped with lettuce, onion, tomato, pickles and cheddar cheese, available on a white or multi-grain bun. There are five more varieties, gussied up with ingredients like grilled mushrooms, guacamole, pico de gallo and chipotle barbecue sauce, all piled up so high that eating the thing can be a serious challenge. There are burger alternatives as well: chicken sandwiches (crispy and breaded or tender and broiled) and salads (Caesar, Asian chicken and more). Sides like garlic fries and onion rings complete the meal, with milkshakes for dessert.—Keith Wagstaff
