It was a sad day when Chelsea's Empire Diner shuttered its doors in 2010--but not all is lost. The team behind the Coffee Shop has revamped the iconic chrome digs, installing a full bar and offering upscale American comfort foods. Alas, the fare--think fried chicken sandwiches, burgers, poached eggs, mac 'n' cheese, isn't great (save for a surprisingly tasty burrata and arugula salad). The service needs some work, too, but the outdoor seating is pleasant on a sunny day (provided you're under an umbrella).
