This sunny little East Village café provides a haven for New York vegans. Not that you have to be vegan to come here; even carnivores can enjoy a nice espresso sourced from North Carolina-based artisanal roasters Counter Culture Coffee. Eight different varieties of organic, fair-trade tea are also available from Rishi. Owner Joanna Troccoli prepares plenty of vegan and non-vegan pastries like pear-ginger muffins, banana macaroons and mocha chip muffins. Every day the café stocks one vegan sandwich and salad, like the popular cucumber avocado sandwich. The tiny space has a cute, rustic vibe thanks to an abundance of flower pots, mason jars and Edison bulbs. Grab one of the eight stools along the tile-covered bar or take a seat on the rough-hewn wooden benches sitting in the light of the front window, where you can relax to the sound of Troccoli's personal iPod jamming out classic and indie rock over the stereo.—Keith Wagstaff
