With a theme built around 19th-century New Orleans, the Ninth Ward is just as ominous as the name implies. Owned by the same folks behind the equally eerie Shoolbred's across the street, the bar goes for a similar "abandoned but strangely intact parlor room" feel. Look for real, salvaged New Orleans decor, all weathered, wooden, and damp-looking with occasional bursts of beauty, such as an ornate stained-glass panel of a pirouetting dancer. Here, Abita is the beer of choice, while the star cocktail is the rum-based Hurricane, prized Louisiana beverages both out-of-towners and East Village regulars can agree on.
