This wine-bar offshoot adjacent to its parent, Wallse, offers a modest list of good wines at modest prices (for a wine bar), and a short list of beguiling dishes that is exactly what chef Kurt Gutbrunner wants you to eat with wine. The homemade liverwurst is excellent, as is the Liptauer cheese, which is kind of like Velveeta for grown-ups. A discrete number of moody black and white photos line the walls, and the chef himself is often seen hanging out at the bar, appraising the reception of his handiwork. I can think of few places I'd rather be sitting in the West Village, drinking a glass of wine.
