The team behind Mary Queen of Scots and Highlands gave up the tartan and looked south to England for its third restaurant. Located in the West Village, Whitehall offers everything you want in a gastropub: a lively bar scene fueled by potent gin cocktails, modern décor (subway tiles; Edison bulbs; a/k/a glare bulbs; and lots of wood), friendly service, and a menu of Brit-inspired classics. Start off with the bacon-studded, baked oysters Kilpatrick or the crispy shrimp cocktail, then chow down on the hearty burger or the root vegetable-and-lentil stew with minted yogurt.
