Capturing the excitement of the old Hell's Kitchen before it became a suburb of Times Square, Wondee often hops in the evening with a wonderful collection of trannies, flamboyant partygoers, and well-meaning tourists. Though the retrograde menu may be old-fashioned, sugary, and low on faddish regional fair, it eats well, especially duck kra prow, with the quacker transformed by pressing and frying into something resembling thick bacon. Noodles and curries are also desirable. In the former category witness kee mao, not a tribute to the late Chinese leader, but a salty stir-fry with a bang-up assortment of veggies and noodles, resembling chow fun.
