This location is the flagship of the Wu Liang Ye Sichuan chain, which currently numbers three Manhattan branches. While the prices are higher than you might pay in Bensonhurst or Flushing, the elegant town house setting, and crystal chandeliers, make it unique among Chinese restaurants. While failing somewhat in the Sichuan peppercorns component, the food is often still hot as hell, and the wontons swim lugubriously in hot chile oil, the braised beef and cabbage comes swamped in chile oil, and even the ma po tofu is as oily as it gets in Chengdu. The tea-smoked duck struck is probably the best rendition in town, and don't miss the dan dan noodles-but mix vigorously first.
