Slowly but surely, American Apparel is taking over Manhattan. The company focuses on the basics: AA's simple cotton clothes prioritize fit and material, and they're not produced in sweatshops, so they're politically sensitive, too. Those who balk at paying (relatively) high prices for tees and underwear need only to try these on to be convinced. Their aggressive retail strategy (so many stores in so short a time!) is a bit off-putting, though.
