Location Description:

Though located on Indian Row in the Upper West Side, Awash serves down-to-the-boiled-egg authentic Ethiopian in a somewhat upscale, unassuming space that serves one purpose: seating people to eat good food. Especially tasty is the vegetarian combo plate, which is essentially a big, spicy platter of all of Awash’s vegetable dishes on top of a spare salad of lettuce and tomatoes. Keep in mind that any Ethiopian dining experience is atypical, if only because no traditional western utensils are used. All food is eaten with the aid of only teff injera, a somewhat sponge-like flatbread that makes cleaning plates a little too easy. The service at Awash is casual to the max, and may be sometimes inattentive, but if you order a glass of the honey wine you won’t mind waiting around for a while. --Shane Barnes
