Chef Pedro Hernandez Perez creates generous plates of home-style Mexican fare at this Upper West Side restaurant. The best dishes -- hearty, satisfying and a bit rough around the edges -- are reminiscent of the staff meals Perez used to cook at Land Thai, where he was previously the sous chef. Slippery leaves of nopales appear in a rowdy little salad of jicama, radish, and string beans ($7), while tiny pork meatballs ($8) arrive hot in chorizo oil and cheese. Occasionally, lesser-known ingredients (like the sharp, cilantro-esque herb pipicha, and blooming wands of huauzontle) will appear in a dish, but the kitchen tends to play it safe. On any given night, the 26-seat spot is packed with cheerful locals sipping micheladas made with Valentina hot sauce, dipping puffy blue-corn chips into fresh guacamole ($6), so diners may have to wait for a free table.
