El Omda

33-10 28th Ave. Long Island City, NY 11103 | Long Island City | 718-204-9393

Location Description:

El Omda ("The Mayor") is quite simply one of the city’s best Egyptian restaurants, and it's located on a quiet side street in Astoria. The menu consists of three general classes of food. First, the commonplace vegetarian dishes of the Middle East, with a few special Egyptian recipes thrown in, a cuisine that includes baba ganoush, the toasted-pita salad called fatoush, and foul madamas -- a street-food bowl of fava beans with enough garlic to blow the top of your head off. Second are seafood dishes from all over the Mediterranean rim, including modified Moroccan tajines of shrimp and squid, Sicilian seafood pastas, and, most Egyptian of all, blackened fish that might make you think of New Orleans. Third are meat-bearing kebabs and stews, many cooked over charcoal. The quartet of lamb chops is shockingly cheap, and probably merits a trip from any other borough. The interior of El Omda feels like somebody’s house, with historic pictures of the dessert and hanging metal lanterns. There’s a hookah lounge in the rear. --Robert Sietsema
