James Beard, who wrote over two dozen cookbooks, became a TV personality, and founded The James Beard Cooking School 1955, wanted everyone to cook. His foundation continues to honor chefs and cookbook authors, but also to instill a knowledge and love of food in young people through a scholarship program for culinary school students (some of whom have gone on to achieve their own gourmet glory). The foundation is also deeply involved with a program called Spoons Across America, a not-for-profit organization which educates schoolchildren about nutrition and the social significance of food. Dinners, lunches, and workshops are held at The James Beard House to showcase chefs and techniques from around the world.
