La Paella East

214 E. 9th St. New York, NY 10003 | East Village | 212-598-4321

Location Description:

It's all about Spain at this tapas spot in the East Village, open since 1995. Inside, rustic wooden furniture, wrought-iron chandeliers and a mural depicting Don Quixote give the place a worn-in, Old World vibe. The mood is often festive thanks to the long list of Spanish wines and pitchers of fruit-filled sangria. As you probably could guess from the name, paella is a big draw here; try the Basque, filled with chorizo, chicken, shrimp, mussels and squid. Ham and cheese croquettes, goat cheese-stuffed peppers, bacon-wrapped shrimp and grilled sea scallops are just some of the small plates on the menu. Choose individually or opt for the mixed tapas plate for two. Several deals are also available: the three-course $13 lunch set and the three-course early bird special (including a beer or glass of sangria) for $17, available between 5pm and 7pm.—Keith Wagstaff
