Madiba Restaurant

195 DeKalb Ave. Brooklyn, NY 11205 | Brooklyn | 718-855-9190

Location Description:

This South African restaurant, located in Fort Greene, is based conceptually on the Shebeen, or communal dining hall, which sits at the center of a traditional South African township. Its menu highlights seafood sourced from the South Atlantic, as well as a large selection of South African wines. Madiba, named for Nelson Mandela's tribe, is also strong on upscale versions of traditional South African dishes such as bunny chow (a hollowed-out loaf of white bread filled with vegetarian curry), bobotie (baked ground beef, curried and topped with egg custard), and pap, chakalaka, and roti. Offering everything from brunch to dinner and cocktails, Madiba has become a neighborhood hangout, its higher prices mitigated by the diverse clientele and by the owners' commitment to their home country; a portion of all proceeds are donated to South African charities. --Diana Clarke
