As part of our progressive curriculum, NAFA fencers earn patches to signify their level within the club. Students must pass increasingly demanding tests that assess fencing knowledge and abilities in order to move up. This system, modeled on the top fencing schools in France, motivates students to achieve more, bolsters their confidence, and better prepares them to eventually compete in the sport. After passing their first two tests and reaching level “C”, students are eligible for private lessons. This traditional master/apprentice format, the history of which goes back to Renaissance Europe, provides a critical element of the young fencer’s training as well as establishes a solid, long-term mentor relationship with the coach, a springboard for future competitive success.
