Rack & Soul

New York, NY 10025
212-222-4800
This joint project of Harlem's Charles Southern Kitchen (which began life as a panel truck called Charles Mobile Soul Food Kitchen) and barbecuist John Wheeler blends soul food and barbecue. While the fried chicken is meaty, moist, and delicious, parts of the barbecue menu are even better. A surprise favorite is the pulled-pork sandwich, with a modest amount of very smoky pork shoulder surmounted by creamy coleslaw on a sesame seed bun. The beef rib (the menu is careful to use the singular) could double as a baseball bat. There's a pleasant sit-down dining room with a view of Broadway, too.
