Wildlly popular on the weekends, when it floods with Chinese families, this Malaysian restaurant in Brooklyn's Bath Beach is named after an island that lies 10 miles offshore from the Malay peninsula, and not far from Thailand either. The bill of fare emphasizes those dishes brought to Malaysia by Cantonese immigrants, including Hainanese chicken, a cold poached bird in rich soy sauce that's a perfect summer dish, and wonton mee, a light flavorful soup with noodles, and wontons stuffed with pork and shrimp. Other dishes reflect the sour tastes of Chinese immigrants who've been in the region for four centuries or more, utilizing tamarind, lemongrass, and citrus juices. Especially good are asam laksa (a tart, fishy-tasting soup), and any of the fish-head stews.
