On February 24, 2004, city workers counted 2,694 people sleeping on the streets. And more than 6,000 families lodge nightly in city shelters. This NYPIRG campaign educates college and high school students about homelessness (and has 20 campus chapters in New York), does political advocacy, and tries to make life a bit more comfortable for those on the streets. Volunteers extend hands to soup kitchens and even register homeless people to vote.
