Location Description:

Inside the Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club, located within a Gowanus warehouse, you can practically feel the palm trees swaying in the Floridian sun. Curtained cabanas line back walls. Beach chairs bedeck a pair of bars and tall tables. Tropical drinks flow, Sunshine State–themed kitsch dots the walls, and strands of lights twinkle overhead, wound around ceiling fans you could imagine whirring lazily in a breeze. And then, of course, there are the 10 shuffleboard courts, the focus of the massive 15,000-squarefoot space; they gleam turquoise like a row of swimming pools. The bar pays homage to a hobby popular with octogenarians, but the place has no trouble filling its leagues with twenty and thirtysomethings, and teams compete against each other early in the week. Come on a weekend, and you'll almost certainly have to wait for a lane. Sip something cold and fruity and forget about it — this is staycation, after all.
