My biggest beef with how well TV on the Radio, Nellie McKay, Fiery Furnaces, Interpol, Animal Collective, Scissor Sisters, Devendra Banhart, Hold Steady (who I like a lot), Sonic Youth, the Walkmen, Secret Machines, and LCD Soundsystem did in Pazz & Jop this year (besides that few sound as original as adherents claim) is that, at this point in history, pretending New York City is the center of the universe is shooting yourself in the foot by definition. Which doesn't mean the international geographics boosted below will completely ignore the town.
