Alas: Thursday Night's Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club Show In Prospect Park Is Canceled

Visa issues alas -- same sorta calamity that torpedoed Joao Gilberto's Carnegie Hall show a few days back. The free Celebrate Brooklyn! gig will go on, though, replaced by a screening of Wim Wenders' Buena Vista Social Club flick, with flamenco dancer Nelida Tirado as the opening act. Full release below:

BRIC Arts | Media | Bklyn regretfully announces that the June 24 free performance by the Orquesta Buena Vista Social Club® featuring Omara Portuondo has been cancelled because the group had difficulty getting visas for all musicians in time to travel to New York from Cuba.

The opening performance by flamenco dancer Nelida Tirado will take place at 7:30 P.M. as planned, followed by a special screening of Wim Wenders' Buena Vista Social Club film on the festival's enormous outdoor screen (50' wide x 21' high), New York City's largest. The event, part of Celebrate Brooklyn's American Express Roots Music Series, is free (with a $3 suggested donation at the gate).

The Orquesta's performance at Celebrate Brooklyn! will not be rescheduled this summer. BRIC has been advised that the group still hopes to perform as scheduled at Chicago's Ravinia Festival on Saturday, June 26, and at Los Angeles's Hollywood Bowl on Sunday, June 27.

Jack Walsh, BRIC's Director of Performing Arts Programs & Executive Producer of Celebrate Brooklyn!, and Rachel Chanoff, the festival's Artistic Director, shared their disappointment about the cancellation: "We are crestfallen with this turn of events, but greatly appreciate that all those involved worked extremely hard to avoid this disappointing result. While a rescheduled performance is not possible this summer, we hope we can reschedule this amazing group to perform at Celebrate Brooklyn! at some point in the future."
