Asphalt Indie-Rock Jungle
Since we know you cant think of anything youd rather do than stand in 90-plus-degree heat in an overcrowded parking lot, elbow to elbow with thousands of strangers, we bring you the Sixth Annual Village Voice Siren Music Festival. The hot-and-sweaty lineup is a Whos Who of indie-rock luminaries: Tapes n Tapes, one of the best of the new crop of American dance-rockers, earn kudos for their injection of loungey, spastic grooves with postpunky rumbles. Man Man and Celebration are bound to get carnivalesque and freaky, the former via Tom Waitsy clitter-clatter and Ritalin-ridin grade-school-like choirs, the latter via gothic drum-and-organ grooves. Speaking of goth, this year there are quite a few different strains of dark and brooding: The Stills are beloved (and back from absentia) melodic mope rockers, She Wants Revenge will up the woe-is-me factor with disco-fied black-eyeliner runs, and Deadboy & the Elephantmens take on the doldrums is lo-fi goth-blues. The rest of the roundup includes gay-pop heroes the Scissor Sisters, dreamy guitar-sparking Serena Maneesh and the similar-sounding Stars, hooky dance-punk rockers the Cribs and their Fall-like rivals Art Brut, and quasi-metalheads Priestess. Also on the bill are the Roger Sisters and Dirty on Purpose.
