Cheap Laughs: The Best in Independent Comedy This Week, 3/12 - 3/18
Wu-Tang's Masta Killa wants YOU to hear him tell stories at The Creek and the Cave this Friday at 10pm.
Consider this week's Cheap Laughs our gift to a city about to experience something terrible: the regurgitated Guinness festival that is St. Patrick's day. Lord, have mercy. Do yourself a favor. Avoid the ass-clowns at McWherever's and go watch some live comedy. Here is our roundup of the best in independent comedy this week.
Wednesday, March 12th
Hot Crowd Over the Eight, 8 p.m. Free. Williamsburg is getting spoiled these days, with incredible independent stand-up shows popping up in what seems like every single bar back-room. Hot Crowd has pedigree and panache this week, with the hilarious Jon Fisch and Dan St Germain tearing laughter out of your chest at Over the Eight. The undercard has gems on it too: catch Rojo Perez and Scotland Green, two comedians whose stars are on the rise.
Thursday, March 13th
Two Black Dudes and a Microphone Stand Up NY Labs, 8 p.m. Free.
These dudes ran this show for five years in Chicago, and tore up that town with great lineups. Now hosts Will Miles and Clark Jones are both NYC residents, they're transplanting their show into the fertile soil at Stand UP NY Labs. It should make waves. The packed show includes Jon Laster with Janine Brito, Nate Fridson and a bunch of very funny folks. Seating will be very limited so make sure to reserve seats by emailing email@example.com.
Friday, March 14th
Road Stories The Creek and the Cave, 10 p.m. Free.
Your long wait is over. Party animal Andrew W.K. and Wu Tang's go-to mic assassin Masta Killa will be our inaugural guests on the storytelling show featuring the wildest, weirdest tales from comedians' and musicians' days on tour. And comics Joe List and Leah Bonnema swing by to tell a few stories of good times and bad decisions. Get there early to avoid disappointment.
Saturday, March 15th
Comedyology Videology, 8 p.m. Free.
Ross Parsons and Daralyn Kelleher host this show in the back of a video store, featuring premieres of original short films, stand-up sets, sketches, and all things funny. It's a free show, and audience members can win free DVD rentals, which is a pretty sweet deal. Tonight VH1 Best Week Ever host Nick Turner, Seth Myers' writer Michelle Wolf and lunatic comic visionary Nick Vatterott give you a dynamite show.
Sunday, March 16th
If You Build It UCBeast, 8 p.m. $5.
The East Village's best weekend stand-up show keeps on trucking, with College Humor head honcho Streeter Seidel, the wonderfully weird Julio Torres and thought leader Robert Dean. Host Kara Klenk runs a tight joke ship, so if you didn't have Sunday plans, you should have this as your plan. Plus, an alt-comedy show is probably the best place in America to avoid all the idiots pre-gaming for St Patrick's Day.
Monday, March 17th
Sagher and Gethard UCB Chelsea, 8 p.m. $5.
So now it's actual St Patrick's Day, when functional alcoholics can hide their disease behind pride in a country they've never visited. It's amateur hour out on those streets, so take refuge in the work of two true comedy professionals. Chris Gethard and Tami Sagher are some of the best improvisers in New York City (or any city), and create a completely made-up, coherent, hilarious show from a single audience suggestion. The fact that a show this magical is only five bucks? It's why we live in this town.
Tuesday, March 18th
Big Long Sets UCBeast, 9.30 p.m. $5.
Adam Newman and Mark Normand are both in the new crop of New York comics to earn a true career milestone: Comedy Central half-hour specials. They're both taping soon, so the two performers are running all over town, honing killer sets for TV. Tonight you can see them both, and enjoy years of joke-writing and stagecraft boiled down to a tight, dirty 30. Highly recommended.
