UK comic Simon Amstell performs at The Bell House tonight

This week in Cheap Laughs, we get transatlantic with a visiting U.K. comic, soothe your post-Wrestlemania pains, and highlight shows dealing with the core fundamentals of life: boobs, bacon, and bawling your eyes out. Here are our picks for the best in independently produced New York comedy this week.

Wednesday, April 9th

Simon Amstell The Bell House, Doors 7 p.m / Show 8 p.m. $15.

Simon Amstell is that rare breed of UK comic, frequently touring the US to test and shape his material for audiences on both sides of the Atlantic. His last tour show "Numb" was a global hit, and he's back in New York for a short time to workshop new material. Amstell is a big TV star in England, but he's Jewish, gay, anxious, and hilarious... so he's practically a New Yorker by default.

Free Bacon The Creek and the Cave, 8 p.m. Free.

Yes, this is the only comedy show in New York that offers everyone in attendance free bacon. Stand-up comedians do their thing, but if at any point an audience member feels their cholesterol dropping dangerously low, they simply help themselves to the ample fried pig "buffet" at the back of the room. Kevin Berrey and Farah Brook host the madness each month. Giulio Gallarotti, Josh Rabinowitz, Sue Smith, and others, are your comics for the night.

Thursday, April 10th

This Is Going to Hurt UCB Chelsea, 8 p.m. $5.

For six months, friends Glenn Boozan and Karin Hammerberg emailed each other every time they cried. In the end, the list of things that gave them the weeps was so funny, ridiculous, and personal, they decided to write something based on it. Part-sketch, part story-telling, all sobbing-related. Come on down for some serious catharsis.

Friday, April 11th

...And I Am Not Lying UCBeast, Midnight. $5

Is this the best variety show in New York right now? We say, "hell yes." Warming up before a tour run to Nashville this weekend, this show is a wonderful mixed bag of misfits. Coney Island superstar Kryssy Kocktail will be swallowing swords, burlesque dancer Fem Appeal performs a Michael Myers-themed tease, host (and Moth Grand Slam winner) Jeff Simmermon tells stories, and there's stand-up from Sam Evans and Charla Lauriston. If this show isn't the cure for your weekend blues, we don't know how to help you.

Saturday, April 12th

UCBW WrestleSlamMania IX UCB Chelsea, Midnight. $5.

Wrestling fans: still cut up about The Undertaker's broken streak at this Sunday's Wrestlemania? We have the perfect therapy. UCB's comedy wrestling league has entertained baying crowds for almost a decade, and shows no sign of stopping. Just take a look at some of the matchups this evening. "The Black Planet Himself" Marz takes on "Manly Man" Randy Manly. There's a three-way championship match between Old Fishstix, The Abominable Snowman and Crust Punk. And there's also a filthy battle featuring #HeartThrob and El Gimpo. Let's get ready to Rumble, baby.

Sunday, April 13th

Ma Boyz Muchmore's, 9 p.m. Free

This is less of a formal comedy show, more of a rolling stand-up jam. Jordan Temple and Kat Toledo have gathered sixty of their very closest friends to each perform four minutes of material, hang out, party and get drunk. If you wanted a one-night overview of the alt(ish) New York stand-up scene circa 2014, this might be the perfect snapshot.

Tuesday, April 15th

Hot Soup Irish Exit, 8 p.m. Free

Matt Ruby, Mark Normand and Gary Vider run this exceptional free showcase, which in recent months has featured drop-in sets from Anthony Jeselnik, Aziz Ansari and Nick Kroll. The lineups are typically a last-minute affair, so we can't tell you who will be on the show. But we can guarantee that whoever they are, they'll be well worth your time.
